    Virtual Observatory based identification of AX J194939+2631 as a new cataclysmic variable

    We report the discovery of a new cataclysmic variable (CV) among unidentified objects from the ASCA Galactic Plane Survey made using the Virtual Observatory data mining. First, we identified AX J194939+2631 with IPHAS J194938.39+263149.2, the only prominent H-alpha emitter among 400 sources in a 1 arcmin field of the IPHAS survey, then secured as a single faint X-ray source found in an archival Chandra dataset. Spectroscopic follow-up with the 3.5-m Calar Alto telescope confirmed its classification as a CV, possibly of magnetic nature. Our analysis suggests that AX J194939+2631 is a medium distance system (d ~ 0.6 kpc) containing a late-K or early-M type dwarf as a secondary component and a partially disrupted accretion disc revealed by the double-peaked H-alpha line.     Finiteness of N =4 super-Yang-Mills effective action in terms of dressed N =1 superfields

    We argue in favor of the independence on any scale, ultraviolet or infrared, in kernels of the effective action expressed in terms of dressed N =1 superfields for the case of N =4 super-Yang--Mills theory. Under ``finiteness'' of the effective action of dressed mean superfields we mean its ``scale independence''. We use two types of regularization: regularization by dimensional reduction and regularization by higher derivatives in its supersymmetric form. Based on the Slavnov--Taylor identity we show that dressed fields of matter and of vector multiplets can be introduced to express the effective action in terms of them. Kernels of the effective action expressed in terms of such dressed effective fields do not depend on the ultraviolet scale. In the case of dimensional reduction, by using the developed technique we show how the problem of inconsistency of the dimensional reduction can be solved. Using Piguet and Sibold formalism, we indicate that the dependence on the infrared scale disappears off shell in both the regularizations.Comment: 12 pages, revised version, references adde

    Spatial patterns of knowledge-intensive business services in cities of various sizes, morphologies and economies

    We compare intra-urban localization patterns of advertising and IT companies in three large Czech cities. The main aim of our analysis is an empirically-based contribution to the question to what extent do knowledge bases affect the spatial distribution of various knowledge-intensive business industries. The central research question is: To what extent is the localization of these two industries influenced by different modes of innovation/knowledge bases (symbolic vs. synthetic) and to what extent by contextual factors, such as urban size, morphology, position in the urban hierarchy and economic profile of the given city. We found that the urban contexts shape the localization patterns of advertising and IT companies more than differences in knowledge bases-both industries cluster primarily in the inner cities and urban cores.     Search versus Knowledge: An Empirical Study of Minimax on KRK

    This article presents the results of an empirical experiment designed to gain insight into what is the effect of the minimax algorithm on the evaluation function. The experiment’s simulations were performed upon the KRK chess endgame. Our results show that dependencies between evaluations of sibling nodes in a game tree and an abundance of possibilities to commit blunders present in the KRK endgame are not sufficient to explain the success of the minimax principle in practical game-playing as was previously believed. The article shows that minimax in combination with a noisy evaluation function introduces a bias into the backed-up evaluations and argues that this bias is what masked the effectiveness of the minimax in previous studies
